LARC June Meeting

The meeting will be held at the 427 Wing, 2155B Crumlin Road North
London, Ontario (43.033766, -81.1589447).

The meeting will be held on June 7th, 2018 at 7:30 pm.

A note from our President Dave McCarter, VE3GSO:

Brad, VE3BGW, will be attending our next meeting and he will have

available for sale a few RETEVIS RT82 DMR radios.  These radios are 5W

dual band analog and DMR radios with GPS included.  Brad will be

selling them for $150.99 +HST. Their list price is apparently $229.00

plus tax.  I found them on Amazon US for $139.00 which when converted

to CDN is currently $177.50, and that does not include tax, so a bit

more than what Brad is selling for.

Follow up to our Robot Demonstration at the May Meeting

Doug Elliott  VA3DAE says:

After I got home last night, I figured out why the robot wouldn't come to life for the demo.

In order for the telemetry to work, the robot makes a connection to the Wifi network when it boots up, so it can be reached. The bot knows about my Wifi net, and Andrew's Wifi net, but it doesn't know the network name, or password for the Wing's Wifi net. So, it aborted the startup.

I'm going to make a change so it will come up anyway if it can't connect to a network, and will do a demo at the kit builders get together tomorrow that we can video for the website.

I've attached a PDF of the presentation for website purposes.

 2018 Field Day is coming

2018 ARRL Field Day is June 23-24

Field Day is ham radio's open house. Every June, more than 40,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio's science, skill and service to our communities and our nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933, and remains the most popular event in ham radio. More information is availalbe here.

 New Hams on the air

20180407_135039[1].jpg

On Saturday April 7th afternoon Mike Watts, VE3ACW, introduced two newly minted hams, Philip, VA3PGJ, (left) and his son Tristan,VA3TGJ, (right) to the joys of SSB on 20m at the LARC club station VE3LON.  They both passed the Basic Exam with Honours just minutes before. Shortly after this photo was taken dad and son changed places so both had plenty of microphone time. Look for them on the local repeaters and perhaps soon on HF.

Congratulations to the both of you, we all look forward to hearing you on the air!

 Distracted Driving Legislation for Ontario

A suggestion is that you print out the legislation and have it available in your vehicle.

The attached document makes it easy for hams to print and put it in their glove compartment, along with a copy of their ham license.

Documentation of the legislation is here.

On December 15, 2017, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) announced that the current two-way radio exemption for “Amateur Radio operators and specified commercial, public transit, and public function drivers will be extended for a further three-years, effective January 1, 2018 until January 1, 2021.”
